Sometimes it feels like we hit the same moment more than once. We think we have grown past something, only to find ourselves right back there again. It can feel confusing or even frustrating. Why does it keep happening? Why do we keep bumping into the same emotions, the same habits, even the same thoughts?
This idea of circling back to the same place in life might sound all too familiar. Whether it is a pattern we cannot seem to break or a lesson we keep revisiting, most of us know what that feels like. In Part 3 of our “Life of a Disciple” series, we talk about what it means to be caught in those repeat moments and how we might start looking at them differently.
For many of us living near or around Lakeland, Florida, life can feel like it moves in loops. But the more we revisit these same places in our lives, the more we begin to see that God might be doing something we had not noticed before.
What It Means to Keep Bumping Into It
The phrase “keep bumping into it” is simple but says a lot. It is that feeling when something keeps coming back up, even when we thought we were done with it. Maybe it is an old reaction we hoped we had stopped having or a part of our story we do not like thinking about. Sometimes it is a struggle we thought we had already worked through.
We all have areas we are growing in, and it is pretty common to feel like we take a few steps forward only to end up back where we started. But coming back to the same spot does not always mean we have failed. Maybe we have unfinished work there. Maybe it is not about fixing the problem, but about seeing it in a new way.
Growth does not usually happen in a straight line. It zigzags. Sometimes it loops. Sometimes those loops are part of how God keeps shaping us, slow and steady, into someone new.
Why God Might Let It Happen Again
So why would God let us face the same thing more than once? We may not always know, but there is comfort in the idea that God does not waste anything. Even the moments that make us feel stuck can be meaningful.
Sometimes we need to see something more than once before we really understand it. God might let us walk through something again, not as a punishment, but as a way to show us more of who He is and who we are becoming. An old habit showing up again might be a chance to approach it with more kindness this time. A hurt feeling making a return could remind us to ask for help instead of trying to fix it ourselves.
In the Bible, we see people return to familiar places all the time. Peter goes back to fishing. Moses returns to Egypt. It is part of how learning happens. Not quickly, but over time, as trust and faith build.
Learning Something New the Second (or Third) Time
Sometimes all it takes is looking at something with fresh eyes. We might be in the same room, same routine, or same argument, but we have changed. That difference in us can make all the difference in how things move forward.
Walking through something again might help us spot new responses. Maybe last time we reacted with fear, and this time we respond with prayer. Maybe we used to shut down, but now we stay open, even if it is still a little hard.
Grace lets us walk into familiar situations with softer hearts. It tells us we are not defined by those moments. Even if we did not get it right last time, we have a new chance to learn something now. This time around, we might just notice something we missed before.
A Florida Kind of Faith Journey
Life in Central Florida does not really have bold seasons. It goes from warm to hot, with little change in how the days feel from month to month. Sometimes that can mirror our own growth, slow, almost unnoticed.
Living near Lakeland, Florida, many of us get used to the same views and weather. But that does not mean nothing is happening. Trees grow. Seeds break through. The ground changes, even if we cannot see it from one day to the next.
Our faith works like that too. Just because things feel the same on the surface does not mean God is not shifting something underneath. We may still be in the same house, same job, same pattern. But He is teaching us through it. Something real is happening, even if it does not look different right away.

Running into the same thing again is not always a sign of failure. A lot of the time, it is a sign that something deeper is going on. Maybe we are being invited to see it through a clearer lens or respond from a slightly healthier place.
It is easy to get discouraged when life does not seem to move in a straight line. When we start to notice those repeated moments and treat them as meaningful instead of annoying, a shift happens. Our focus resets. We look for growth instead of just answers. We notice where we got stronger. We start to see that these repeat points in our lives are not working against us. Sometimes they are working for us, gently inviting us forward.
Messages from pastors like Andrew Gard remind us that this pattern is part of our process. Peace does not mean everything makes sense. It just means we are willing to keep walking even when we do not.
Repetition can teach us more than a breakthrough ever could. When we look at our lives closely, we begin to see that running into the same thing a few times might have a purpose after all. Something is being softened. Something is being shaped. We just have to keep showing up.
